AT A HINGE

Who Todd Works With

Todd’s clients tend to arrive at a hinge. The drinking or the using or the pattern has stopped being a private arrangement and started costing things that don’t come back easily, and the next few months matter more than the last few years.

He works with addiction and recovery, from substances and from behaviors; with professionals whose work stress, work-life imbalance, and high-achieving anxiety have quietly become the whole weather system; and with men who were handed a three-word emotional vocabulary and are ready for a bigger one. What his clients have in common is the moment itself: things have to change, the change has to hold, and pretending otherwise has stopped being an option.

HARD TO SHOCK, EASY TO TALK TO

How a Session With Todd Works

Todd is hard to shock and easy to talk to. He is steady where the situation is not, more interested in what happens after the crisis than in the drama of it, and convinced by everything he has watched hold or break that the changes which hold are the ones other people help carry, which is exactly why he does so much of his work in groups. Sessions with him are practical: what has to hold this week, what nearly broke last week, and what structure makes the difference between a good intention and a different life.

WOUNDED HEALER, PRECISELY MEANT

Before This Work

Todd’s path here was not a straight line: an economics degree, detours through acting and teaching, and then addiction treatment settings since the early 2000s, from residential and detox programs to outpatient work.

Somewhere in there his own life hit its turning point too. He went through treatment, got into recovery, and has stayed in it, and the choice to spend his working life in therapeutic environments came directly out of that. He’ll use the phrase “wounded healer” for himself. The wound is not the qualification, but the healing taught him what holds and what doesn’t, and that knowledge is in the room with every client.

Outside the Office

Weekends find Todd at the lake with his wife, with grown sons who still come around, and with SEC football on in the fall. He has also sung in the same a cappella group for 22 years, which may be the most sustained aftercare plan on this page.
